Two stoppage time goals for the New England Mutiny snapped Boston’s five-game winning streak Saturday night in East Longmeadow, Mass., less than 24 hours after the Breakers beat ASA Chesapeake Charge, 3-1, at home.

In front of 1,031 at East Longmeadow High School, Taleen Dimirdjian scored the game-winner with less than 30 seconds left in the game. The goal came just two minutes after Tiffany Weimer leveled the game for the Mutiny. The Breakers opened the scoring in the 47th minute off a goal from Australian forward Kyah Simon. It was Simon’s WPSL Elite leading 12th goal of the season.

"I was happy with the performance overall. I think we needed to score more, score earlier, so we need to do some work in our final third, and we need to be a little bit better in our composure, but we learned some good lessons today, and hopefully we’ll be able to take that into the playoffs," Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. "I think (playing two games in two days) played a role. I think we had some players that were on tired legs. You see us not being as efficient in front of goal, which we’ve normally been really efficient in. You saw some passes just missing, especially late in the game. We’re normally more cleaner than that. It has an effect. When you play at this level, and you’re taxing your body 100 percent in one game, you can’t ask anybody to come back and play that same high level the next day."

The Breakers (9-3-0, 27 points, 2nd place WPSL Elite) defended well early, particularly in goal, where Alice Binns was forced to make a couple of big stops in the first 10 minutes. She also got some huge help from defender Courtney Jones in the 5th minute. Weimer played a ball to Kate Howarth, and Binns came out to challenge. Howarth managed to maneuver around Binns and put a shot on goal, but Jones sprinted to the near post and blocked Howarth’s shot.

The Mutiny (4-5-2, 14 points, 5th place) felt the same pressure down their end. Keeper Vicki Alonzo had to react quickly in the 19th minute to stop a header from Simon. Three minutes later, Bianca D’Agostino made Alonzo work to stop a shot from distance. In the 31st minute, Alonzo pulled off a stunning save to deny Amanda DaCosta right in front of goal. Jones crossed the ball to Simon, who then flicked it over to DaCosta. The midfielder then hit a shot on goal destined for the back of the net, but Alonzo managed to somehow get a leg on the ball before catching it and preventing a Breakers goal.

It didn’t take long for the Breakers to get on the scoresheet in the second half. Just two minutes in, DaCosta crossed midfield and made a quick run out wide. She promptly pushed a well-placed through ball right to the feet of Simon, who then slotted it past Alonzo to give Boston a 1-0 lead. For DaCosta, it was her first assist of the season. She would later leave the game with an ankle injury.

"It was a good buildup and (DaCosta) put a brilliant through ball in behind the defense for me to run onto and it took a bit of composure from me to slide it past the keeper as she was coming out," Simon said.

The Breakers nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute, but Melissa Henderson’s shot 10 yards from goal was punched out by Alonzo, who finished the game with five saves. In the 60th minute, the Breakers came close twice. First, Simon rang one high off the post seconds before D’Agostino fired one over the bar. The Breakers tried to extend their lead in the 74th minute with Leslie Osborne making a run down the right before sending in a ball to Simon, but Simon’s shot on goal was stopped by Alonzo.

The Mutiny tied the game seconds into added time when Weimer went in one-on-one with Binns before hitting it past the Breakers keeper for her first goal of the season. And less than two minutes later, Weimer played a ball to Becca Mays, who then set up Dimirdjian for the game-winner.

The Breakers return to the field Saturday, July 14, at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville for their final home game of the season. It is also PUMA Project Pink Night. The players will wear pink jerseys to raise awareness of breast cancer. Jerseys will be raffled off after the game, with the money going towards a breast cancer charity.
