Competitive Soccer

Competitive soccer is for individuals who are looking for a more structured environment and are willing to travel around the northern metro area to compete against other cities and clubs.  This program also requires you to attend additional team training sessions and you have the ability to compete in multiple invitational tournaments throughout the summer season.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child start competitive soccer?  Many players begin competitive soccer
in the U9 to U12 age levels. At U9/U10, games are 6 v 6 players and move to 8 v 8 at
U11/U12 age levels. This “small sided” format allows players to get more
touches on the ball than they would have in the traditional 11 v 11 format, improving
skill development.

Who should play competitive soccer?  Competitive soccer is for kids who love soccer,
who demonstrate better than average skills in rec soccer, and who want to play soccer
more often. Two of the major differences between rec soccer and competitive soccer are
the level and intensity of play on the field and the amount of practice and games
throughout the year.

What is a typical competitive soccer schedule/commitment? Competitive soccer teams’
game schedules are established by MYSA, while practice and tournament schedules are
determined by the individual coaches and teams. Travel is generally within the Twin
Cities area, with 5-6 away games per summer season and fewer in the fall. A typical
calendar for competitive teams includes indoor team training throughout the winter
and participation in 1-2 indoor leagues between January and April. Outdoor soccer starts
in late April and goes through early to late July, depending on age level and team
ability. Summer competitive teams typically practice Tu/Th/Su or M/W/Su with some
weekend tournaments. Fall season runs from mid-August to mid-October for U9-U14
teams. Older players generally play soccer for their high schools during the fall.

What does it cost to play competitive soccer?  Fall 2016 registration was $150
per player and Summer 2017 is $295.  Uniforms are approximately $120
and are typically worn for multiple seasons. Summer and fall tournament fees are an
additional expense and vary by team. Many teams also participate in indoor training
and/or leagues during the off season (November-March). Indoor team training costs
around $75 per player, and indoor leagues can cost $80 to $100 per player per session.

How does my child join a North Metro competitive soccer team?  Competitive Player Identification
(Tryouts) for U9-U14 fall, and U9-U16 summer teams, are held in late July each year.  Check the
web site in May/June for more information.  Please contact the respective competitive directors if you
have questions.
