FRANCIS SCHILBERGER

Francis H. Schilberger (deceased) lettered four years at Corning Free Academy from 1938 to 1941 as an outfielder and pitcher..."Hot Dog" batted close to .350 during his four-year varsity career...was named to the All-County as an outfielder his junior year and named as an outfielder and pitcher following his senior campaign... was a key member of the Bulldogs team that went undefeated in 1938 and county champions in 1940 and 1941...he lost the city championship to Northside in 1941 but came back to pitch CFA to the county title before losing the sectional tide in the final game to Spencerport...also lettered in basketball during his junior and senior years at CFA...played semi-pro during the summer in the early forties prior to entering the U.S. Army in 1942...while serving with the 100th Infantry in France, "Hot Dog" played basketball and baseball for his unit...on December 9, 1944 he was wounded in action and died the following day...the baseball field at Fort Breckenridge in Pforzheim, Germany is named Schilberger Field in his honor.
