Richard Sparling has devoted over 25 years to the world of motorsports in the Coming area beginning in the 1940s when he was asked to install fence posts that would outline a 1/4 mile dirt race track inside Corning War Memorial Stadium. He soon became involved in those races driving a 1933 Plymouth. In 1960, Dick became involved with the go-cart track at Campbell and before the year was over, he was organizing all the races. In 1966, he was asked by SCCA to supply a wrecker at the Watkins Glen track and it became an annual volunteer action on his part. In the late 1960s and early 70s, he got involved driving in SCCA races in a Lotus Formula Ford and was named as the Best Regional driver in the Glen region. It was at this time that Sparling's Northside Esso Racing Team (a.k.a. SNERT) was formed and Dick became a fixture in the winner’s circle at many SCCA events, not only at Watkins Glen but at such places as Pocono Raceway and Lime Rock in Connecticut among others. Throughout his 25-plus year career in motorsports, Dick was always helping someone further their involvement in the sport in one way or another and served his final years in the SCCA as an instructor. If there was ever a legend in local motorsports, Homer Snert was it. He retired in 1974 and he and his lovely wife Georgia moved to Perkinston, Mississippi. SNERT is alive and well and now a rebel.
